and it is also with Muslim (6/170-171) except that he said: "so he named him Muḥammad, and we said: we will not give you the kunyah of the Messenger of Allāh (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam)..." The narration of al-Bukhārī is more reliable in my view because it agrees with the narration of Ibn al-Munkadir, which is unanimously accepted first, and because if he had named him Muḥammad, he (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) would not have commanded him to name him ʿAbd al-Raḥmān as is apparent. The point is that this ḥadīth of Jābir clearly indicates that he (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) did not approve of the Anṣārī using his kunyah (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam), and he appreciated the Anṣār's disapproval of it, thus invalidating what was inferred from the ḥadīth of Abū al-Zubayr and Shurayk regarding the permissibility of using his kunyah (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) alone without being accompanied by his name. I have come across another ḥadīth, but its isnād is questionable; I present it to clarify its status. Yaʿqūb ibn Muḥammad al-Zuhrī said: Idrīs ibn Muḥammad ibn Yūnus ibn Muḥammad ibn Anas ibn Faḍālah al-Anṣārī then al-Ẓafarī narrated to us, saying: My grandfather narrated to me from his father, who said: The Prophet (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) came to Madīnah while I was two weeks old, and I was brought to him. He wiped over my head and said: "Name him with my name but do not give him my kunyah." He said: And I performed the Ḥajj with him during the Farewell Pilgrimage when I was ten years old and had a lock of hair. Yūnus ibn Muḥammad said: My father lived long enough that his entire head turned gray, but the place where the hand of the Messenger of Allāh (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) touched did not turn gray. It was recorded by al-Bukhārī in "al-Tārīkh" (1/16), al-Dūlābī in "al-Kuná" (1/5), and al-Ṭabarānī in "al-Muʿjam al-Kabīr" (19/244/547). I said: This isnād is weak; this Yaʿqūb was said by al-Ḥāfiẓ: "Truthful but made many mistakes and narrated from weak narrators."
