It was recorded by Aḥmad (2/457 and 461). This is the wording of the group from Abū Hurayrah as previously mentioned, and it is the preserved version from him in this ḥadīth and from Jābir and others. Al-Bayhaqī pointed to this by saying after the ḥadīth of Abū al-Zubayr from Jābir mentioned earlier, he said in "al-Sunan": "This was also narrated from another perspective from Abū Hurayrah (raḍiya Allāhu ʿanhu), and there is a difference in it, and the ḥadīths prohibiting it unconditionally are more numerous and authentic." And among what confirms the error of the narration of Sharīk from... Abū Hurayrah, and the narration of Abū al-Zubayr from Jābir is the reason for the ḥadīth's occurrence, from the narration of Muḥammad ibn al-Munkadir from him. Ibn Abī Shaybah (8/672/5980), Aḥmad (3/307), and al-Ḥumaydī (1232) said: Sufyān narrated to us from Ibn al-Munkadir who heard Jābir ibn ʿAbd Allāh say: A boy was born to a man among us, and he named him al-Qāsim, so we said: We will not give you the kunya Abū al-Qāsim, nor will we bless you with it. So he went to the Prophet (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) and mentioned that to him, and he said: "Name your son ʿAbd al-Raḥmān." Its isnād is a sound three-narrator chain according to the criteria of the two Shaykhs, and it was recorded by al-Bukhārī (6186 and 6189) and Muslim (6/171) and others through various routes from Sufyān ibn ʿUyaynah with it. Sālim ibn Abī al-Jaʿd followed him from Jābir with it, except that he said: "Use my name but do not use my kunya." It was recorded by al-Bukhārī (3114 and 6187) and "al-Adab al-Mufrad" (842).
