I said: This is a good isnād, its men are trustworthy, the men of the two Shaykhs, except for a weakness in al-Fuḍayl due to his memory. The ḥāfiẓ mentioned him in "Muqaddimah al-Fatḥ" (p. 435) and summarized: "He was truthful, but had anomalies. The group narrated from him, and he has no ḥadīths in 'al-Bukhārī' except those he was followed up on." So I say: His ḥadīth has a supporting narration indicating that it is preserved and not anomalous, narrated by Abū Salamah from Saʿd ibn Abī Waqqāṣ from the Messenger of Allāh (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) regarding wiping over the leather socks, that there is no harm in it. It was recorded by al-Nasāʾī (1/31), Aḥmad (1/169 and 169-170), and Ibn ʿAsākir in "Tārīkh Dimashq" (7/168) through the route of Mūsá ibn ʿUqbah from Abū al-Naḍr from him. I said: This isnād is authentic according to the criteria of the two Shaykhs. Al-Bayhaqī also recorded it (1/269-270), but he inserted ʿAbd Allāh ibn ʿUmar between Abū Salamah and Saʿd, and added in its text the story of Ibn ʿUmar with his father and Saʿd, which is found in al-Bukhārī (202) through the route of ʿAmr (who is Ibn al-Ḥārith): Abū al-Naḍr narrated to me from Abū Salamah ibn ʿAbd al-Raḥmān from ʿAbd Allāh ibn ʿUmar from Saʿd ibn Abī Waqqāṣ from the Prophet (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) that he wiped over the leather socks, and that ʿAbd Allāh ibn ʿUmar asked ʿUmar about that? He said: Yes, if Saʿd tells you something about the Prophet (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam), do not ask anyone else about it. Mūsá ibn ʿUqbah said: Abū al-Naḍr informed me that Abū Salamah informed him that Saʿd... and ʿUmar said to ʿAbd Allāh... something similar. Thus, al-Bukhārī suspended it from Mūsá without providing its wording, and the ḥāfiẓ did the same in his "Sharḥ" (1/305) and did not connect it, contrary to his usual practice!
