a man [from the Anṣār] came to the Prophet (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) covered in iron, and said: O Messenger of Allāh! Should I fight or embrace Islam? He said: "No, rather embrace Islam and then fight." So he embraced Islam, then fought and was killed. The Messenger of Allāh (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) mentioned him. The narration is from al-Bukhārī, and he does not include: "this," which is found in Aḥmad's version along with the other two additions. The first of these is also found in Muslim (6/43-44) through the chain of Zakarīyā from Abū Isḥāq with the wording: "A man from Banī al-Nubayt—a clan of the Anṣār—came and said: I bear witness that there is no deity but Allāh, and that you are His servant and Messenger. Then he advanced, fought until he was killed. The Prophet (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) mentioned him, except that he said: 'a little' instead of 'a small amount.'" It was also narrated by al-Ṭayālisī in "his Musnad" (724) and through his chain by al-Ruyānī in "his Musnad" (21/2/1-2): Abū Wakīʿ [al-Jarrāḥ ibn Malīḥ] narrated to us from Abū Isḥāq with the wording: that the Messenger of Allāh (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) was fighting the enemy, and a man covered in iron came, so the Messenger of Allāh (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) offered him Islam, and he embraced Islam. He said: What is the best deed that I should do? He said: "You fight a people you came from." So he fought until he was killed, and the Messenger of Allāh (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) mentioned him. Then al-Ruyānī also narrated it (20/13/1-2) as did Saʿīd ibn Manṣūr in "al-Sunan" (3/2/230) through the chain of Ḥudayj ibn Muʿāwiyah: Abū Isḥāq narrated to us from al-Barāʾ ibn ʿĀzib similarly, except that he added: "He said: Even if I have not prayed to Allāh a single prayer? He said: Yes. So he charged, fought, and was killed..." I say: Abū Isḥāq is ʿAmr ibn ʿAbd Allāh al-Sabīʿī, and the four chains—as you see—revolve around him. He had become confused, and Isrāʾīl—who is the son of Yūnus ibn Abī Isḥāq
