I said: he is closer to being deemed reliable, and the truth is that he is moderate and his ḥadīth is good, for Aḥmad, Isḥāq, and al-Ḥumaydī used his narrations as evidence. Al-Ḥāfiẓ said in "al-Taqrīb": "Truthful in his ḥadīth but lenient, and it is said: he changed towards the end." I said: it is more appropriate to critique it due to the narrator from him: ʿAmr ibn Thābit, as he is weak by their consensus, even though Abū Dāwūd said about him: "His narrations are sound." The ḥadīth has a corroborating narration from ʿĀʾishah (raḍiya Allāhu ʿanhā), and it has multiple paths: the first: from Masrūq from her, she said: I said: O Messenger of Allāh! Ibn Judʿān in the pre-Islamic period used to maintain ties of kinship and feed the poor, will that benefit him? He said: "It will not benefit him, for he never said: My Lord, forgive me my sin on the Day of Judgment." It was recorded by Muslim (1/136), Abū ʿAwānah (1/99-100), and Aḥmad (6/63). The second: from ʿUbayd ibn ʿUmayr from her with a more complete version. It was recorded by Abū ʿAwānah, Ibn Ḥibbān in his "Ṣaḥīḥ" (number 330 - al-Iḥsān / al-Risālah), Aḥmad (6/120), Abū Yaʿlá (4672), and Abū Nuʿaym in "al-Ḥilyah" (3/278), and Aḥmad and the first in one of his narrations said: "ʿAbd Allāh ibn Judʿān." The third: from Abū Salamah from her. It was recorded by al-Ḥākim (2/405) and he named him "ʿAbd Allāh ibn Judʿān," and said: "Authentic isnād." Al-Dhahabī agreed with him.
قلت: هو إلى التوثيق أقرب، والحق أنه وسط حسن الحديث، فقد كان أحمد وإسحاق والحميدي يحتجون بحديثه، وقال الحافظ في "التقريب": "صدوق في حديثه لين، ويقال: تغير بأخرة". قلت: فالأولى إعلاله بالراوي عنه: عمرو بن ثابت، فإنه ضعيف باتفاقهم، وإن كان أبو داود قال فيه: "أحاديثه مستقيمة". والحديث له شاهد من حديث عائشة ﵂، وله طرق: الأولى: عن مسروق عنها قالت: قلت: يا رسول الله! ابن جدعان كان في الجاهلية يصل الرحم ويطعم المسكين، فهل ذاك نافعه؟ قال: "لا ينفعه، إنه لم يقل يوما: رب اغفر لي خطيئتي يوم الدين". أخرجه مسلم (١ / ١٣٦) وأبو عوانة (١ / ٩٩ - ١٠٠) وأحمد (٦ / ٦٣). الثانية: عن عبيد بن عمير عنها به أتم منه. أخرجه أبو عوانة، وابن حبان في "صحيحه" (رقم ٣٣٠ - الإحسان / الرسالة) وأحمد (٦ / ١٢٠) وأبو يعلى (٤٦٧٢) وأبو نعيم في "الحلية" (٣ / ٢٧٨) وقال أحمد والأول في رواية له: "عبد الله بن جدعان". الثالثة: عن أبي سلمة عنها. أخرجه الحاكم (٢ / ٤٠٥) وسماه "عبد الله بن جدعان"، وقال: "صحيح الإسناد". ووافقه الذهبي.
