"even if he commits adultery and even if he steals." It is authentic. There are many authentic and well-known ḥadīths with this meaning in "the two Ṣaḥīḥs" and others. I have only included this one because of the addition it contains and to point out the error of al-Būṣīrī in declaring it weak due to a break in the chain. And Allāh knows best.
"I was not sent with Judaism nor with Christianity, but I was sent with the easy and upright religion. By the One in whose hand is my soul, a morning or an evening spent in the path of Allāh is better than the world and all that is in it, and the standing of one of you in the row [for battle] is better than his prayer for sixty years." It was narrated by Aḥmad (5/266), al-Ṭabarānī in "al-Kabīr" (7868), and Ibn ʿAsākir in "al-Arbaʿīn fī al-Jihād" (ḥadīth 15) through the route of Muʿān ibn Rifāʿah: ʿAlī ibn Yazīd narrated to me from al-Qāsim from Abū Umāmah who said: We went out with the Messenger of Allāh (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) on one of his expeditions. He said: A man passed by a cave with some water in it, and he thought to himself that he would stay in that cave, sustained by the water in it, and live off the surrounding vegetation, abandoning the world! Then he said: If I were to go to the Prophet of Allāh (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) and mention this to him, if he permits me, I will do it, otherwise, I will not. So he went to him and said: O Prophet of Allāh! I passed by a cave with what could sustain me of water and vegetation, and I thought to myself that I would stay in it and abandon the world. The Prophet (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) said: and he mentioned it. I say: This isnād is weak:
