from the understanding of the ḥadīth: The ḥadīth provides clear evidence that responding to greetings of peace verbally by the one praying was initially prescribed in early Islam in Mecca, then it was abrogated to responding by gesture in Medina. And if that is the case, it indicates the recommendation of offering greetings of peace to the one praying, as the Prophet (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) approved of Ibn Masʿūd's offering of it, just as he approved of others who greeted him while he was praying. There are many well-known ḥadīths on this from different paths, and they are extracted in various places. Therefore, the supporters of the sunnah should adhere to it, and be gentle in conveying and applying it, for people are enemies of what they are ignorant of, especially those among them who follow desires and innovations.

- "O devil, come out of ʿUthmān's chest! [He did this three times]." This is from the ḥadīth of ʿUthmān ibn Abī al-ʿĀṣ al-Thaqafī (raḍiya Allāhu ʿanhu), and there are four paths from him: the first is from ʿAbd al-Aʿlá: ʿAbd Allāh ibn ʿAbd al-Raḥmān al-Ṭāʾifī narrated to us from ʿAbd Allāh ibn al-Ḥakam from ʿUthmān ibn Bishr who said: I heard ʿUthmān ibn Abī al-ʿĀṣ say: I complained to the Messenger of Allāh (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) about forgetting the Quran, so he struck my chest with his hand and mentioned it. ʿUthmān said: "I did not forget anything from it after that, and I loved to remember it." It was extracted by al-Ṭabarānī in "al-Muʿjam al-Kabīr" (9/37/8347) and al-Haythamī said in "al-Majmaʿ" (9/3): "It was narrated by al-Ṭabarānī and in it is ʿUthmān ibn Bishr, whom I do not know, and the rest of its narrators are trustworthy."
