from various chains from ʿAbd Allāh ibn Ṣāliḥ: al-Layth narrated to me, Muḥammad ibn ʿAjlān narrated to me from Zayd ibn Aslam from ʿAṭāʾ ibn Yasār from Abū Saʿīd al-Khudrī: that a man greeted the Messenger of Allāh (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) while he was in prayer, and the Prophet (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) responded with a gesture. When he finished, the Prophet (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) said to him: and he mentioned it. al-Ṭabarānī said: "No one narrated it from Ibn ʿAjlān except al-Layth." I said: He is Ibn Saʿd, the Egyptian imam and authority, so the chain is good due to the known disagreement regarding Muḥammad ibn ʿAjlān. al-Haythamī criticized it due to (ʿAbd Allāh ibn Ṣāliḥ) and said (2/81): "It was narrated by al-Bazzār, and it includes ʿAbd Allāh ibn Ṣāliḥ, the scribe of al-Layth. ʿAbd al-Malik ibn Shuʿayb ibn al-Layth considered him trustworthy and reliable, while Aḥmad and others weakened him." The ḥāfiẓ took a middle stance, considering him trustworthy in the narrations of major imams like al-Bukhārī and Abū Ḥātim and the like. See his biography in "Muqaddimah al-Fatḥ." It is apparent that he did not attribute it to al-Ṭabarānī—though it is according to his criteria—so it either fell from him—of which there are examples—or from the copyist, and the former is more likely because he also did not include it in "Majmaʿ al-Baḥrayn" (2/176), which is one of his sources as known to those familiar with "the two collections." Furthermore, the man who greeted the Prophet (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) was ʿAbd Allāh ibn Masʿūd, as narrated by Abū Hurayrah from him, who said: "I passed by the Messenger of Allāh (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) while he was praying, and I greeted him, so he gestured to me." al-Ṭabarānī produced it with an authentic chain from him, and it is included in "al-Rawḍ al-Naḍīr" (637). This occurred upon his return from his migration from Abyssinia, and it is authentically reported from him through multiple routes. Its extraction was previously mentioned in the fifth volume, number (2380), and also in "al-Rawḍ" (605)
