I said: This is a sound isnād, despite the well-known disagreement regarding Saʿīd's hearing from ʿUmar. It serves as a strong corroboration for the addition uniquely reported by Ibn ʿUyaynah. Then, the ḥāfiẓ mentioned other corroborations for it, and their extraction will be discussed soon, Allāh willing. 2 - As for the ḥadīth of Zayd ibn Thābit, it is narrated by Shuʿbah from Qatādah, from Yūnus ibn Jubayr, from Kathīr ibn al-Ṣalt, who said: Ibn al-ʿĀṣ and Zayd ibn Thābit were writing the muṣḥafs, and they passed by this verse. Zayd said: I heard the Messenger of Allāh (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) say: "The old man and the old woman..." the ḥadīth. ʿUmar said: When this was revealed, I went to the Messenger of Allāh (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) and said: Write it for me. - Shuʿbah said - It was as if he disliked that. ʿUmar said: Do you not see that if the old man is not protected, he is flogged, and if the young man commits adultery and is protected, he is stoned? It was recorded by Aḥmad (5/183), al-Nasāʾī in "al-Sunan al-Kubrā" (4/270/7145), and al-Dārimī (2/179) in its elevated form, and by al-Ḥākim (4/360) and al-Bayhaqī (8/211). Al-Ḥākim said: "Its isnād is sound." Al-Dhahabī agreed with him. And it is as they said. In another narration by al-Nasāʾī, number (7148), through another route from Ibn ʿAwn from Muḥammad - who is Ibn Sīrīn - I was informed by the nephew of Kathīr ibn al-Ṣalt, who said: We were with Marwān and among us was Zayd ibn Thābit.
