they mentioned that while ʿUmar ibn al-Khaṭṭāb (raḍiya Allāhu ʿanhu) was among us, he said: "I will relieve you of that." We said: "How?" He said: "I will go to the Prophet (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) and mention such and such, and when he mentions the stoning, I will say: 'O Messenger of Allāh! Write for me the verse of stoning.'" He said: "So I went to him and mentioned it, and he mentioned the verse of stoning. I said: 'O Messenger of Allāh! Write for me the verse of stoning.' He said: 'I cannot do that.'" I said: Its narrators are trustworthy except for the shaykh of Muḥammad, as he is not named, and al-Bayhaqī indicated its authenticity by saying afterwards: "In this and what preceded it is evidence that the ruling of the verse of stoning is established, and its recitation is abrogated, and this is something I know of no disagreement about." Al-Suyūṭī also mentioned it in "al-Durr al-Manthūr" from the narration of al-Nasāʾī and Abū Yaʿlá in a similar manner with some abbreviation in the wording: "I cannot now." As for the ḥadīth of Ubayy, it is narrated by ʿĀṣim ibn Bahdalah from Zirr who said: "Ubayy ibn Kaʿb said to me: 'How many verses do you read in Sūrah al-Aḥzāb, or how many do you count it?' I said: 'Seventy-three verses.'" He said: "Indeed, I saw it, and it was equal to Sūrah al-Baqarah, and we used to read in it: 'The elderly man and the elderly woman...' and he added: 'as a punishment from Allāh, and Allāh is All-Knowing, Wise.'" It was recorded by al-Nasāʾī (7141), Ibn Ḥibbān (6/301/4411 and 4412), al-Ḥākim (2/415 and 4/359), and also by al-Bayhaqī, and ʿAbd al-Razzāq in "al-Muṣannaf" (3/
ذكرواذلك وفينا عمر بن الخطاب ﵁، قال: أنا أشفيكم من ذاك. قال: قلنا: كيف؟ قال: آتي النبي ﷺ فأذكر كذا وكذا، فإذا ذكر الرجمأقول: يا رسول الله! أكتبني آية الرجم. قال: فأتيته فذكرته، قال: فذكرآية الرجم. قال: فقال: يا رسول الله! أكتبني آية الرجم. قال: " لا أستطيعذاك ". قلت: ورجاله ثقات غير شيخ محمد، فإنه لم يسم، وقد أشار إلى صحتهالبيهقي بقوله عقبه: " في هذا وما قبله دلالة على أن آية الرجم حكمها ثابت،وتلاوتها منسوخة، وهذا مما لا أعلم فيه خلافا ". وأورده السيوطي في " الدرالمنثور " من رواية النسائي وأبي يعلى نحوه ببعض اختصار بلفظ: " لا أستطيعالآن ". وأما حديث أبي، فيرويه عاصم بن بهدلة عن زر قال: قال لي أبي بنكعب: كائن تقرأ سورة (الأحزاب) ، أو كائن تعدها؟ قال: قلت: ثلاثا وسبعينآية. قال: قط، لقد رأيتها وإنها لتعادل سورة (البقرة) ، ولقد قرأنا فيها: " الشيخ والشيخة..
