ʿUthmān ibn al-Arqam ibn Abī al-Arqam from his father (may Allāh be pleased with him) said: The Messenger of Allāh (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) said on the day of Badr: so he mentioned it, and Abū Usayd al-Sāʿidī raised the sword of Ibn ʿĀʾidh al-Marzubān, and al-Arqam ibn Abī al-Arqam recognized it, so he said: "Grant it to me, O Messenger of Allāh!" So he gave it to him. al-Ḥākim said: "The isnād is authentic." And al-Dhahabī agreed with him. al-Ṭabarānī said: "It is not narrated from al-Arqam ibn Abī al-Arqam except through this isnād, and Abū Muṣʿab is unique in narrating it." I say: His name is Aḥmad ibn Abī Bakr al-Zuhrī al-Madanī, and he is trustworthy, from the men of the two Shaykhs. And those above him are according to the condition of Ibn Ḥibbān, as Yaḥyá ibn ʿImrān ibn ʿUthmān is mentioned in his "Thiqat," but Abū Ḥātim explicitly stated his unknown status as mentioned in the previous ḥadīth. And his grandfather ʿUthmān ibn al-Arqam, al-Bukhārī mentioned him in "al-Tārīkh" (3/2/214) through the narration of his grandson Yaḥyá from him, and he did not mention any criticism or commendation. Ibn Abī Ḥātim did the same (3/1/144) but mentioned him from the narration of ʿAṭṭāf ibn Khālid and ʿAmmār ibn Saʿd from him. As for Ibn Ḥibbān, he mentioned him in "al-Thiqāt" (5/157) and said: "The people of Ḥijāz and his grandson Yaḥyá ibn ʿImrān ibn ʿUthmān narrated from him." I say: He is truthful, if Allāh wills. al-Haythamī said after attributing it to al-Ṭabarānī's two collections (6/52): "And its men are trustworthy." I say: Such an isnād is strengthened by corroborating reports, and I found a corroborating report for the ḥadīth of the chapter in a story similar to this that occurred to Saʿd ibn Abī Waqqāṣ, and in it is his saying (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam):
عثمان بن الأرقم بن أبي الأرقم عن أبيه ﵁ قال: قال رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم يوم بدر: فذكره، فرفع أبو أسيد الساعدي سيف ابن عائذ المرزبان، فعرفه الأرقم بن أبي الأرقم، فقال: هبه لي يا رسول الله! فأعطاه إياه. وقال الحاكم: " صحيح الإسناد ". ووافقه الذهبي. وقال الطبراني: " لا يروى عن الأرقم بن أبي الأرقم إلا بهذا الإسناد، تفرد به أبو مصعب ". قلت: واسمه أحمد بن أبي بكر الزهري المدني، وهو ثقة من رجال الشيخين. ومن فوقه على شرط ابن حبان، فيحيى بن عمران بن عثمان ذكره في " ثقاته "، لكن صرح أبو حاتم بجهالته كما تقدم في الحديث الذي قبله. وجده عثمان بن الأرقم، ذكره البخاري في " التاريخ " (٣ / ٢ / ٢١٤) برواية حفيده يحيى عنه، ولم يذكر فيه جرحا ولا تعديلا. وكذلك فعل ابن أبي حاتم (٣ / ١ / ١٤٤) ولكنه ذكره من رواية عطاف بن خالد وعمار بن سعد عنه. وأما ابن حبان فذكره في " الثقات " (٥ / ١٥٧) وقال: " روى عنه أهل الحجاز وابن ابنه يحيى بن عمران بن عثمان ". قلت: فهو صدوق إن شاء الله تعالى. وقال الهيثمي بعد أن عزاه لمعجمي الطبراني (٦/ ٥٢): " ورجاله ثقات ". فأقول: فمثل هذا الإسناد يتقوى بالشواهد، وقد وجدت لحديث الترجمة شاهدا في قصة تشبه هذه وقعت لسعد بن أبي وقاص، وفيه قوله ﷺ:
