"this is how this man narrated it to us, but it is only known from the ḥadīth of al-Aʿraj from Abū Hurayrah." I said: the man referred to is his teacher Abū al-Ṣabāḥ, and I did not know him.

"and I bear witness, and bear witness: that no one testifies to it except that he is free from shirk. It means the two testimonies." It was recorded by al-Nasāʾī in "ʿAmal al-Yawm wa-al-Laylah" (155/39) and al-Ṭabarānī in "al-Awsaṭ" (2/266/2/9059) through the route of Aṣbagh ibn al-Faraj who said: Ibn Wahb informed me from ʿAmr ibn al-Ḥārith from Saʿīd ibn Abī Hilāl that Yaḥyá ibn ʿAbd al-Raḥmān narrated to him from ʿAwn ibn ʿAbd Allāh from Yūsuf ibn ʿAbd Allāh ibn Salām from his father who said: While we were traveling with the Messenger of Allāh (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam), he heard a man in the valley saying: I bear witness that there is no deity but Allāh, and that Muḥammad is the Messenger of Allāh. The Messenger of Allāh (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) said: and he mentioned it, and the wording is for al-Nasāʾī, and al-Ṭabarānī added at the beginning: ".. when he heard the people saying: O Messenger of Allāh, which deeds are best? The Messenger of Allāh (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) said: Faith in Allāh and His Messenger, striving in the path of Allāh, and a ḥajj that is accepted, then he heard.." the ḥadīth. And al-Ṭabarānī said: "It is not narrated from ʿAbd Allāh ibn Salām except through this isnād, and ʿAmr ibn al-Ḥārith is unique in narrating it." I said: and he is trustworthy, as are those above him, except for Yaḥyá ibn ʿAbd al-Raḥmān, who is al-Thaqafī. Ibn Abī Ḥātim mentioned him (4/2/166) with this narration, as did Ibn Ḥibbān in "al-Thiqāt" (5/524 and 527), and for this reason, al-Dhahabī said in "al-Mīzān" indicating his unknown status:
