"Saʿīd ibn Abī Hilāl was the only one who narrated from him." The ḥadīth was recorded by Saʿīd ibn Manṣūr in his "Sunan" (3/2/141/2338), where he said: ʿAbd Allāh ibn Wahb informed us with its isnād, along with the addition by al-Ṭabarānī. It was also recorded by Aḥmad and his son ʿAbd Allāh (5/451): Hārūn ibn Maʿrūf narrated to us, Ibn Wahb narrated it to us. Likewise, it was recorded by al-Ḍiyāʾ al-Maqdisī in "al-Mukhtārah" (58/8/1) from various paths where they said: Ibn Wahb informed us with it. Ḥarmalah ibn Yaḥyá differed from all of them in his isnād, saying: Ibn Wahb narrated it to us, except he said: "Yaḥyá ibn ʿAbd Allāh ibn Sālim" instead of "Yaḥyá ibn ʿAbd al-Raḥmān." It was recorded by Ibn Ḥibbān in his "Ṣaḥīḥ" (7/58/4576): ʿAbd Allāh ibn Muḥammad ibn Salm informed us: Ḥarmalah ibn Yaḥyá narrated it to us. And this Ibn Sālim is trustworthy. I suspect this is an error by Ḥarmalah, for although he is trustworthy and one of the teachers of Muslim, some have spoken about him as you can see in "al-Tahdhīb," and thus al-Dhahabī said in "al-Kāshif": "Truthful but narrates rare things." As for Ibn Salm, who is al-Ḥimṣī, he is a trustworthy imām and muḥaddith, and Ibn Ḥibbān deemed him trustworthy, as mentioned by al-Dhahabī in "Siyar al-Nubalāʾ" (14/306). This investigation was either ignored or overlooked by the commentator on "al-Iḥsān" (10/456/4596) — and I suspect it was someone other than Shaykh Shuʿayb among those working under him — who said: "Its isnād is strong according to the criteria of Muslim except for Yūsuf ibn ʿAbd Allāh ibn Salām, for the authors of the Sunan narrated from him, and he is a minor Companion." Then he extracted it from the narration of Saʿīd and Aḥmad, without addressing the contradiction that occurred from Ḥarmalah in their narration, nor did he attribute it to al-Nasāʾī, ʿAbd Allāh ibn Aḥmad, and al-Ṭabarānī!
