the Messenger of Allāh (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) was asked about a man who finds wetness but does not remember a dream. He said: "He should perform ghusl." And about a man who thinks he had a dream but does not see wetness, he said: "There is no ghusl upon him." Umm Sulaym said: Is there anything upon a woman who sees that? He said: "Yes, indeed women are..." [the ḥadīth continues]. It was recorded by Abū Dāwūd (1/37), al-Tirmidhī (1/189-190), and Aḥmad (6/256). Al-Tirmidhī said: "And ʿAbd Allāh ibn ʿUmar was weakened by Yaḥyá ibn Saʿīd due to his memory in ḥadīth." I said: What is feared is his poor memory, so if his narration is corroborated, it indicates that he remembered correctly, and that is the case here. Others have narrated this story from Anas, and its isnād is authentic as previously mentioned by Ibn al-Qaṭṭān. It was also recorded by al-Dārimī (1/195): Muḥammad ibn Kathīr informed us from al-Awzāʿī from Isḥāq ibn ʿAbd Allāh ibn Abī Ṭalḥah from Anas who said: Umm Sulaym entered upon the Messenger of Allāh (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam), and with him was Umm Salamah, and she said: Does a woman see in her dream what a man sees? Umm Salamah said: May your hands be dusty, O Umm Sulaym, have you exposed women? The Prophet (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) said, defending Umm Sulaym: "Rather, may your hands be dusty, the best among you are those who ask about what concerns them. If she sees water, she should perform ghusl." Umm Salamah said: Do women have water, O Messenger of Allāh? He said: "Yes, from where does the child resemble them?
