- "You have done well and acted rightly. O Allāh, grant him success." He said this to ʿAbd Allāh ibn al-Arqam. It was recorded by al-Ḥākim in "al-Mustadrak" (3/335), who said: Muḥammad ibn Ṣāliḥ ibn Hāniʾ narrated to us, al-Faḍl ibn Muḥammad al-Bayhaqī narrated to us, ʿAbd Allāh ibn Ṣāliḥ narrated to us, ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz ibn Abī Salamah al-Mājishūn narrated from ʿAbd al-Wāḥid ibn Abī ʿAwn from al-Qāsim ibn Muḥammad from ʿAbd Allāh ibn ʿUmar (raḍiya Allāhu ʿanhu) who said: A letter came to the Prophet (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) from a man, and he said to ʿAbd Allāh ibn al-Arqam: "Reply on my behalf," so he wrote the reply and then read it to him, and he said: (and mentioned the ḥadīth). When ʿUmar assumed leadership, he would consult him. Al-Ḥākim said: "The isnād is authentic." Al-Dhahabī agreed with him. I say: There is some scrutiny, as al-Faḍl ibn Muḥammad al-Bayhaqī, who is al-Shaʿrānī, was mentioned by the author al-Dhahabī in "al-Mughnī" and said: "[Ibn] (1) Abī Ḥātim said: They criticized him." Al-Dhahabī also provided a good biography of him in "Siyar" (13/317-319), where he quoted the aforementioned statement of Ibn Abī Ḥātim, and then followed it with the statement of Ibn al-Akhram about him: "Truthful, but extreme in Shīʿism." And al-Ḥākim said: "I did not see any disagreement among the scholars who heard from him regarding his trustworthiness and honesty, may Allāh be pleased with him, and he was a cultured, knowledgeable, and devout worshiper..."
