a large group of Muslims. When they saw our perseverance and realized we did not intend to retreat, they fled. A man would fall, and seven would fall upon him in succession, and they would all be killed. The iron spikes behind them would cut them down. Al-Nuʿmān said, "Advance the banner," so we advanced the banner, killed them, and defeated them. When al-Nuʿmān saw that Allāh had answered his prayer and saw the victory, an arrow struck his side and killed him. His brother, Maʿqil ibn Muqrin, came and covered him with a cloth, took the banner, advanced, and then said, "Advance, may Allāh have mercy on you." So we advanced, defeated them, and killed them. When we finished and the people gathered, they asked, "Where is the commander?" Maʿqil said, "Here is your commander, whose eyes Allāh has delighted with victory and who has been sealed with martyrdom." The people pledged allegiance to Ḥudhayfah ibn al-Yamān. It was said that ʿUmar ibn al-Khaṭṭāb (raḍiya Allāhu ʿanhu) was in Medina, praying to Allāh and waiting anxiously. Ḥudhayfah wrote to ʿUmar about the victory with a man from the Muslims. When he arrived, he said, "Rejoice, O Commander of the Faithful, with a victory in which Allāh has honored Islam and its people and humiliated shirk and its people." He asked, "Did al-Nuʿmān send you?" He replied, "Count al-Nuʿmān among the martyrs, O Commander of the Faithful." ʿUmar wept and said, "Who else, woe to you?" He said, "So-and-so and so-and-so"—until he mentioned several people—and then said, "And others, O Commander of the Faithful, whom you do not know." ʿUmar (raḍiya Allāhu ʿanhu), while weeping, said, "It does not harm them that ʿUmar does not know them, but Allāh knows them." I said: This isnād is authentic, its narrators are trustworthy. Mubārak ibn Faḍālah explicitly stated the transmission, and he was followed by Saʿīd ibn ʿUbayd Allāh al-Thaqafī: "Bakr ibn ʿAbd Allāh al-Muzanī and Ziyād ibn Jubayr narrated from Jubayr ibn Ḥayyah up to his saying: 'and the prayers are attended.'" It was recorded by al-Bukhārī (3159 and 3160), with an addition: "and the wing of Caesar," and al-Ḥāfiẓ (6/264) indicated its oddity, as it contradicts the path of Mubārak ibn Faḍālah and the path of Maʿqil ibn Yasār that follows, in which it states: "Iṣbahān is the head, and Fāris and Azerbaijan are the wings."
