we crossed over. My father said, "I have never seen anything like today. The soldiers come as if they are mountains of iron, and they have vowed not to flee from the Arabs. Some of them are tied to each other, with seven in a group, and they have thrown iron spikes behind them, saying, 'Whoever flees from us will be wounded by the iron spikes.'" Al-Mughīrah ibn Shuʿbah said when he saw their numbers, "I have never seen a day like today with so many slain. Our enemy allows themselves to rest, so do not rush." "By Allāh, if the matter were up to me, I would have hastened them." He said, "Al-Nuʿmān was a man who wept often, and he said, 'Allāh, the Glorious and Mighty, has witnessed you in similar situations, so do not let it grieve you or blemish your standing.'" "By Allāh, nothing prevents me from engaging them except something I witnessed from the Messenger of Allāh (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) that the Messenger of Allāh (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam)... (and he mentioned the ḥadīth)." Then Al-Nuʿmān said, "O Allāh, I ask You to grant me the joy of victory that brings honor to Islam and its people, and humiliation to disbelief and its people." "Then grant me martyrdom following that." Then he said, "Say 'Āmīn,' may Allāh have mercy on you." So we said 'Āmīn' and he wept, and we wept. Al-Nuʿmān said, "I will shake my banner, so prepare yourselves with weapons. Then I will shake it a second time, and be ready to fight your enemy opposite you. When I shake it a third time, let each group charge at those nearest to them from their enemy, with the blessing of Allāh." He said, "When the time for prayer arrived and the winds blew, he proclaimed the takbīr and we followed." He said, "By Allāh, it is the wind of victory, if Allāh wills, and I hope that Allāh will answer me and grant us victory." He shook the banner, and they prepared themselves. Then he shook it a second time, and then a third time, and we all charged, each group at those nearest to them. Al-Nuʿmān said, "If I am struck down, then Ḥudhayfah ibn al-Yamān will lead the people. If Ḥudhayfah is struck down, then so-and-so, and if so-and-so is struck down [then so-and-so], until he named seven, the last of whom was al-Mughīrah ibn Shuʿbah." My father said, "By Allāh, I did not know of any Muslim who wished to return to his family until he was either killed or victorious." فعبرنا. فقال أبي: فلم أر كاليوم قط، إن العلوج يجيئونكأنهم جبال الحديد، وقد تواثقوا أن لا يفروا من العرب، وقد قرن بعضهم إلىبعض حتى كان سبعة في قران، وألقوا حسك الحديد خلفهم وقالوا: من فر منا عقرهحسك الحديد. فقال: المغيرة بن شعبة حين رأى كثرتهم: لم أر كاليوم قتيلا (١)، إن عدونا يتركون أن يتناموا، فلا يعجلوا. أما والله لو أن الأمر إلي لقدأعجلتهم به. قال: وكان النعمان رجلا بكاء، فقال: قد كان الله جل وعزيشهدك أمثالها فلا يحزنك ولا يعيبك موقفك. وإني والله ما يمنعني أن أناجزهمإلا لشيء شهدته من رسول الله ﷺ أن رسول الله صلى الله عليهوسلم..
