in Nahāvand, Bandār [the foreigner] sent to them saying, "O Arabs, send us one of your men to speak with us." The people chose al-Mughīrah ibn Shuʿbah. My father said, "It is as if I can see him now: a tall, hairy, one-eyed man." He went to him, and when he returned to us, we asked him, he said to us: "I found the foreigner consulting his companions, asking, 'In what manner should we receive this Arab? With our splendor, grandeur, and authority? Or should we present ourselves humbly to make him disdain what we possess?'" They said, "Rather, we should receive him with the best of splendor and equipment." When I saw them, I saw those spears and shields glimmering in the light, and I saw them standing over him. He was on a golden throne, with a crown on his head. I proceeded as I was and lowered my head to sit with him on the throne. He said, "I was pushed and rebuked, so I said, 'Messengers are not treated this way.'" They said to me, "You are but a dog; do you sit with the king?!" I said, "I am more honorable among my people than this one is among you." He said, "He rebuked me and said, 'Sit down.' So I sat." He translated his words for me, saying, "O Arabs, you were the hungriest of people, the most miserable, the filthiest, the furthest in abode, and the furthest from all good. What prevented me from ordering these warriors around me to shoot you with arrows was only the defilement of your corpses, for you are impure. If you leave, you will be spared, but if you refuse, you will meet your deaths." Al-Mughīrah said: "I praised Allāh and extolled Him and said, 'By Allāh, you have not erred in describing us. We were indeed the furthest in abode, the hungriest, the most miserable, and the furthest from all good, until Allāh sent us a Messenger who promised us victory in this world and paradise in the hereafter. We have continued to experience success and victory from our Lord—since His Messenger (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) came to us—until we reached you. And by Allāh, we see for you a kingdom and a life that we will never return to that misery until we overcome you for what you possess or die in your land.'" He said, "As for the one-eyed man, he has spoken truthfully about what is in his heart." I left him, and by Allāh, I had terrified the foreigner as much as I could. The foreigner sent to us saying, "Either you cross over to us in Nahāvand or we will cross over to you." Al-Nuʿmān said, "Cross over."
بنهاوند أرسل إليهم بندار [العلج] أن أرسلوا إلينا يا معشر العرب رجلا منكم نكلمه، فاختار الناس المغيرة بن شعبة، قال أبي: فكأني أنظر إليه: رجل طويل أشعر أعور، فأتاه، فلما رجع إلينا سألناه؟ فقال لنا: وجدت العلج قد استشار أصحابه في أي شيء تأذنون لهذا العربي؟ أبشارتنا وبهجتنا وملكنا؟ أو نتقشف له فنزهده عما في أيدينا؟ فقالوا: بل نأذن له بأفضل ما يكون من الشارة والعدة. فلما رأيتهم رأيت تلك الحراب والدرق يلمع منها البصر، ورأيتهم قياما على رأسه، فإذا هو على سرير من ذهب، وعلى رأسه التاج، فمضيت كما أنا، ونكست رأسي لأقعد معه على السرير، فقال: فدفعت ونهرت، فقلت: إن الرسل لا يفعل بهم هذا. فقالوا لي: إنما أنت كلب، أتقعد مع الملك؟! فقلت: لأنا أشرف في قومي من هذا فيكم، قال: فانتهرني وقال: اجلس. فجلست. فترجم لي قوله، فقال: يا معشر العرب، إنكم كنتم أطول الناس جوعا، وأعظم الناس شقاء، وأقذر الناس قذرا، وأبعد الناس دارا، وأبعده من كل خير، وما كان منعني أن آمر هذه الأساورة حولي أن ينتظموكم بالنشاب إلا تنجس الجيفكم لأنكم أرجاس، فإن تذهبوا يخلى عنكم، وإن تأبوا نبوئكم مصارعكم. قال المغيرة: فحمدت الله وأثنيت عليه وقلت: والله ما أخطأت من صفتنا ونعتنا شيئا، إن كنا لأبعد الناس دارا، وأشد الناس جوعا، وأعظم الناس شقاء، وأبعد الناس من كل خير، حتى بعث الله إلينا رسولا فوعدنا بالنصر في الدنيا، والجنة في الآخرة، فلم نزل نتعرف من ربنا - مذ جاءنا رسوله ﷺ - الفلاح والنصر، حتى أتيناكم، وإنا والله نرى لكم ملكا وعيشا لا نرجع إلى ذلك الشقاء أبدا حتى نغلبكم على ما في أيديكم أو نقتل في أرضكم. فقال: أما الأعور فقد صدقكم الذي في نفسه. فقمت من عنده وقد والله أرعبت العلج جهدي، فأرسل إلينا العلج: إما أن تعبروا إلينا بنهاوند وإما أن نعبر إليكم. فقال النعمان: اعبروا
