their eyes and their chins fell upon their chests, and they were stunned in their seats, not raising their gaze to him, nor did any man among them stand up to him. Then the Messenger of Allāh (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) approached them until he stood over their heads, took a handful of dust and said, "May the faces be disfigured," and then threw it at them. Not a single pebble from that dust struck any of them except that he was killed as a disbeliever on the Day of Badr. I said: This isnād is good; its men are trustworthy, the men of the authentic collections, except for Yaḥyá ibn Sulaym, who is al-Ṭāʾifī, about whom there is some discussion regarding his memory. However, he has been corroborated by several others, thus we are secure from his poor memory, and the ḥadīth is authentic, and all praise is due to Allāh. Firstly: Saʿīd ibn Manṣūr said in "Sunan" (3/2/354): Ismāʿīl ibn ʿAyyāsh from ʿAbd Allāh ibn ʿUthmān ibn Khuthaym. Secondly: He was followed by Maʿmar from Ibn Khuthaym with it. It was recorded by Aḥmad (1/368): ʿAbd al-Razzāq narrated to us: Maʿmar narrated to us... I said: This isnād is good according to the conditions of Muslim. Thirdly: Abū Bakr ibn ʿAyyāsh from ʿAbd Allāh ibn ʿUthmān ibn Khuthaym with it. It was recorded by al-Ḥākim (3/157) in a shortened form, and by al-Bayhaqī in "al-Dalāʾil" (2/277-278) and al-Ḥākim said: "Authentic isnād." And al-Dhahabī agreed with him. And the ḥadīth was mentioned by al-Haythamī (8/228): "Aḥmad narrated it with two isnāds, and the men of one of them are the men of the authentic collections."
