"it was not narrated from Ibn Thawbān from ʿAbdah except by Abū al-Muṭarif... and others narrated from Ibn Thawbān from ʿAṭāʾ ibn Qurrah from ʿAbd Allāh ibn Ḍumrah from Abū Hurayrah." I said: This is more accurate due to the agreement of the two trustworthy narrators on it, and because this Abū al-Muṭarif is not known in the books of men [i.e., biographical dictionaries], then I saw that al-Dāraqutnī had preceded me in this, as he said in "al-ʿIlal" (5/89): "and it is the correct [version]." al-Haythamī said (1/122): "I did not see anyone who mentioned him." I said: He was mentioned by Baḥshal in "Tārīkh Wāsiṭ" (181) and he mentioned a report from the narration of Wahb ibn Buqiyyah. al-Dhahabī said in "al-Muqtaṣanā": "weak." And the wording of al-Bazzār: "except enjoining good or forbidding evil." The ḥadīth has a corroborating narration from Jābir, raised [to the Prophet], except that he said: "...except what was for Allāh ﷿." It was recorded by Abū Nuʿaym in "al-Ḥilyah" (3/157 and 7/91), al-Aṣbahānī (Q 143/2), and al-Bayhaqī in "al-Shuʿab" (7/341/10512) through two chains from ʿAbd Allāh ibn al-Jarrāḥ: ʿAbd al-Malik ibn ʿAmr al-ʿAqdī narrated to us, Sufyān ibn Saʿīd narrated to us from Muḥammad [ibn al-Munkadir] from him, and Abū Nuʿaym said: "It is rare from the narration of Muḥammad and al-Thawrī, and ʿAbd Allāh ibn al-Jarrāḥ was unique in narrating it." I said: al-Dhahabī said in "al-Kāshif": "trustworthy."
