first: the ḥadīth of Jābir, narrated by Abū al-Zubayr from him, who said: "When it was the day of Uḥud and the people retreated, the Messenger of Allāh (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) was in a corner with twelve men from the Anṣār, among them Ṭalḥah ibn ʿUbayd Allāh. The polytheists caught up with them, so the Messenger of Allāh (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) turned and said: 'Who will take on the people?'" Ṭalḥah said: 'I will.' The Messenger of Allāh (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) said: 'Stay as you are.' Then a man from the Anṣār said: 'I will, O Messenger of Allāh!' He said: 'You.' So he fought until he was killed. Then he turned and saw the polytheists, and said: 'Who will take on the people?' Ṭalḥah said: 'I will.' He said: 'Stay as you are.' Then a man from the Anṣār said: 'I will.' He said: 'You.' So he fought until he was killed. He continued to say that, and a man from the Anṣār would go out to them, fighting like those before him until he was killed, until only the Messenger of Allāh (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) and Ṭalḥah ibn ʿUbayd Allāh remained. The Messenger of Allāh (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) said: 'Who will take on the people?'
