"he said: This reached a woman from the Banū Asad named Umm Yaʿqūb, who used to read the Quran. She came to him and said: What is this ḥadīth I heard about you that you cursed the women who practice tattooing... (the ḥadīth)? ʿAbd Allāh said: Why should I not curse those whom the Messenger of Allāh (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) cursed, and it is in the Book of Allāh?! The woman said: I have read what is between the two covers of the muṣḥaf and did not find it! He said: If you had read it, you would have found it. Allāh said: *{And whatever the Messenger has given you - take; and what he has forbidden you - refrain from}*. The woman said: I see something of this on your wife now. He said: Go and look. She entered upon ʿAbd Allāh's wife and saw nothing, so she returned to him and said: I saw nothing. He said: If it were so, we would not associate with her." Then I found a third path for the addition from the route of Masrūq: A woman came to ʿAbd Allāh ibn Masʿūd and said: I am a woman with sparse hair; is it permissible for me to add to my hair? He said: No. She said: Is this something you heard from the Messenger of Allāh (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) or do you find it in the Book of Allāh? He said: No, rather I heard it from the Messenger of Allāh (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam), and I find it in the Book of Allāh, and he narrated the ḥadīth. It was recorded by al-Nasāʾī (2/281) in this manner, and by Aḥmad (1/415) and al-Ṭabarānī in "al-Muʿjam al-Kabīr" (9/337/9468) in its entirety similar to the ḥadīth of ʿAlqamah. It is apparent that this woman is Umm Yaʿqūb mentioned in the narration of ʿAlqamah, and she is the same in the narration of Qabīṣah ibn Jābir (who is a trustworthy companion), who said: "We used to share a sūrah of the Quran with a woman to learn it. I went with an old woman from the Banū Asad to Ibn Masʿūd in his house with three people, and he saw her forehead shining! He said: Do you shave it? She got angry and said: The one who shaves her forehead is your wife. He said: Enter upon her, and if she does it, she is disassociated from me. She went, then returned and said: By Allāh, I did not see her doing it. ʿAbd Allāh ibn Masʿūd said: I heard the Messenger of Allāh (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam): and he mentioned it
