(2445): Shuʿbah narrated it with the wording: "Maymūnah or Zaynab." Al-Ḥāfiẓ indicated in "al-Fatḥ" (10/475) the irregularity of this narration by Ibn Marzūq. Al-Bukhārī titled the ḥadīth with the words "Chapter on Changing a Name to a Better One." In the chapter, Ibn ʿAbbās said: "Juwairiyah's name was Barrah, but the Messenger of Allāh (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) changed her name to Juwairiyah, and he disliked that it be said: He came out from Barrah."

"Juwairiyah's name was Barrah, but the Messenger of Allāh (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) changed her name to Juwairiyah, and he disliked that it be said: He came out from Barrah." It was recorded by Muslim (6/173), al-Bukhārī in al-Adab (831), Aḥmad (1/258-326-353), and Ibn Saʿd in "al-Ṭabaqāt" (8/84/85).

"You are Jamīlah." Narrated by Muslim (6/173), al-Bukhārī in "al-Adab al-Mufrad" (820), Abū Dāwūd (4952), al-Tirmidhī (2/137), and Aḥmad (2/18) from Yaḥyá ibn Saʿīd from ʿUbayd Allāh: Nāfiʿ informed me from Ibn ʿUmar that the Messenger of Allāh (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) changed the name of ʿĀṣiyah and said: and he mentioned it. Al-Tirmidhī said: "This is a ḥasan gharīb ḥadīth, and it was only narrated by Yaḥyá ibn Saʿīd al-Qaṭṭān." I say: Rather, it is authentic, for al-Qaṭṭān is a trustworthy, precise, reliable, exemplary ḥāfiẓ as in "al-Taqrīb" by al-Ḥāfiẓ, and he was followed by Ḥammād ibn Salamah from ʿUbayd Allāh with it, and he added that she was the daughter of ʿUmar (raḍiya Allāhu ʿanhu). It was narrated by Muslim and likewise by al-Dārimī (2/295), but he did not mention this addition. It was confirmed by Ibn Mājah (3733).
