- "Eat it — meaning garlic — for I am not like one of you; I fear that I might harm my companion. [Meaning the angel]." It was recorded by Aḥmad (6/433 and 462), al-Ḥumaydī (339), and Ibn Abī Shaybah (8/301/4530), and through his route by Ibn Mājah (3364). All three said: Sufyān ibn ʿUyaynah narrated to us: ʿUbayd Allāh ibn Abī Yazīd informed us, his father told him: I stayed with Umm Ayyūb, upon whom the Messenger of Allāh (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) stayed. I stayed with her and she told me this from the Messenger of Allāh (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam): They prepared a meal with some vegetables and presented it, but he disliked it and said to his companions: and he mentioned it. The addition is from Aḥmad. It was also recorded by al-Tirmidhī (6/107/1811), al-Dārimī (2/102), and Ibn Khuzaymah in his "Ṣaḥīḥ" (1671), and through his route by Ibn Ḥibbān (3/264/2090) through other routes from Sufyān with it. Al-Tirmidhī said: "A good, authentic, and rare ḥadīth, and Umm Ayyūb is the wife of Abū Ayyūb al-Anṣārī." I say: Its narrators are trustworthy, the narrators of the two Shaykhs, except for Abū Yazīd, the father of ʿUbayd Allāh, who is al-Makkī. No one declared him trustworthy except Ibn Ḥibbān, but he did not narrate it alone, as it has been authentically reported from Abū Ayyūb similarly. It was narrated by Muslim and others, and it is also referenced in "al-Irwāʾ" (no. 2511). It is supported by the ḥadīth of Jābir, raised to the Prophet, with the wording: "Whoever eats from this foul tree (in another narration: onions, garlic, and leeks), let him not come near our mosque, for the angels are harmed by what harms humans, and in another narration: the children of Adam." It was recorded by Muslim and others, and it is also referenced in the previous source (547)
