- "When a man came to him with a name he disliked, he would change it." Narrated by al-Khallāl in "Aṣḥāb Ibn Mandah" (folio 153/2) who said: Saʿīd ibn Yazīd al-Ḥimṣī informed us, Muḥammad ibn ʿAwf ibn Sufyān narrated to us: Abū al-Yamān narrated to us, Ismāʿīl ibn ʿAyyāsh from Ḍamḍam ibn Zurʿah from Shurayḥ ibn ʿUbayd who said: ʿUtbah ibn ʿAbd al-Sulamī said: and he mentioned it as a raised narration. I say: This chain is authentic, all its narrators are trustworthy and well-known, except Saʿīd ibn Yazīd al-Ḥimṣī, and it appears he is Ibn Maʿyūf al-Ḥajawī who is trustworthy as mentioned in "Mukhtaṣar Tārīkh Ibn ʿAsākir" (6/179), and Ismāʿīl ibn ʿAyyāsh is reliable in narrating from the people of Syria as stated by al-Bukhārī and others, and this is from them. Al-Haythamī said (8/52): "Narrated by al-Ṭabarānī, and its narrators are trustworthy, though there is some disagreement regarding some of them." I say: It seems he is referring to Ibn ʿAyyāsh, and the answer is known. These are some of the names that the Messenger of Allāh (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) changed as mentioned in authentic ḥadīths: Barrah, ʿĀṣiyah, Ḥuzn, Shahāb, Juthāmah. Here are some ḥadīths on this matter: "Do not ascribe purity to yourselves, for Allāh knows best who among you is truly pious and who is sinful. Name her Zaynab."
