- "When the soul of a servant is taken, the people of mercy from among the servants of Allāh receive him as they would receive a bearer of good news in the world. They approach him to ask him, and some of them say to others: 'Let your brother rest, for he was in distress.' Then they approach him and ask him: 'What did so-and-so do? What did such-and-such woman do? Did she get married?' If they ask about a man who died before him, he tells them: 'He has perished.' They say: 'To Allāh we belong and to Him we return. He has been taken to his mother, the abyss, and what a terrible mother and a terrible nurturer it is.' He said: 'Their deeds are presented to them, and if they see good, they rejoice and are glad and say: 'This is Your blessing upon Your servant, so complete it.' And if they see evil, they say: 'O Allāh, return Your servant.' It was recorded by Ibn al-Mubārak in "al-Zuhd" (149/443): Thawr ibn Yazīd narrated to us from Abū Ruhm al-Samʿī from Abū Ayyūb al-Anṣārī who said: 'They mentioned it as being stopped at him.' Ibn Ṣāʿid, the narrator of "al-Zuhd," said afterwards: 'Salām al-Ṭawīl narrated it from Thawr and elevated it.' I say: The isnād of the stopped narration is authentic. Abū Ruhm al-Samʿī's name is Aḥzāb ibn Usayd. Al-Ḥāfiẓ said in "al-Taqrīb": 'There is a difference of opinion regarding his companionship, but the correct view is that he is a trustworthy successor.'
