"the Prophet (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) would apply kohl in the right eye twice, in the left eye twice, and once between them." It was recorded by Ibn ʿAdī in "al-Kāmil" (p. 244/2) and he said: "I do not know anyone who narrates it from Ibn ʿAwn except ʿUmar ibn Ḥabīb, and he is a good narrator; his ḥadīth is written despite his weakness." Al-Ḥāfiẓ said in "al-Taqrīb": "Weak." Furthermore, the ḥadīth of the chapter has a supporting narration from ʿUqbah's actions (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam). And another from his statement, both of which were mentioned in the third volume (no. 1260). It has other supporting narrations, indicating that applying three times in the right eye and twice in the left was previously documented in the second volume under number (633), where it was mentioned as a supporting narration for this chapter's ḥadīth from al-Bazzār's narration. When I found the difference between its isnād and the isnād of Ibn Jarīr and al-Khaṭīb, I saw it necessary to document it anew and to clarify the statement in the manner previously explained. And Allāh is the one who grants success. As for the ḥadīth of ʿUqbah mentioned, I noted there that its isnād is weak due to Ibn Lahīʿah and his poor memory, but I have now found it from the narration of Ibn Wahb from him with the previous isnād, elevated from his statement (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam). It was recorded by Ibn Jarīr al-Ṭabarī in "Tahdhīb al-Āthār" (2/99/1249). Thus, the ḥadīth is authenticated, and all praise is due to Allāh, because Ibn Lahīʿah's ḥadīth is sound when narrated by the ʿAbādilah, and Ibn Wahb is among them, as well as Qutaybah ibn Saʿīd, as will be mentioned by al-Ḥāfiẓ al-Dhahabī under ḥadīth (2843)
