- "He used to apply kohl in odd numbers." It was narrated by al-Bazzār in "his Musnad" (p. 280/2 - Kashf al-Astār): Muḥammad ibn Abī al-Walīd al-Faḥḥām narrated to us, al-Waḍḍāḥ ibn Yaḥyá narrated to us, Abū al-Aḥwaṣ narrated from ʿĀṣim from Anas who said: and he mentioned it as marfūʿ. And he said: "I do not know anyone who narrated it except Abū al-Aḥwaṣ from ʿĀṣim." I say: They are both trustworthy from the men of the two Shaykhs, and Abū al-Aḥwaṣ's name is Salām ibn Sulaym al-Ḥanafī al-Kūfī, and ʿĀṣim is Ibn Sulaymān al-Aḥwal. The defect of the ḥadīth is from al-Waḍḍāḥ ibn Yaḥyá, and al-Haythamī criticized it, saying in "Majmaʿ al-Zawāʾid" (5/96): "It was narrated by al-Bazzār, and in it is al-Waḍḍāḥ ibn Yaḥyá, who is weak." And Muḥammad ibn Abī al-Walīd is attributed to his grandfather, for he is Muḥammad ibn al-Walīd ibn Abī al-Walīd al-Faḥḥām al-Baghdādī, and he is among the shaykhs of al-Nasāʾī, who said about him: "There is no harm in him." I say: And I fear that there is a mistake in its isnād, for someone more trustworthy than him contradicted him. Ibn Jarīr al-Ṭabarī said in "Tahdhīb al-Āthār" (2/99/1251): Muḥammad ibn Isḥāq narrated to us, al-Waḍḍāḥ ibn Ḥassān al-Anbārī narrated to us, he said: Salām Abū al-Aḥwaṣ narrated from ʿĀṣim ibn Sulaymān from Ḥafṣah bint Sīrīn from Anas ibn Mālik with it, and added: "And Ibn Sīrīn used to apply kohl twice in each eye, and divide one between them." And this Muḥammad ibn Isḥāq is al-Ṣanʿānī, and he is a trustworthy, reliable narrator among the shaykhs of Muslim and the four, and he contradicted al-Faḥḥām in two places in its isnād:
