I saw the Prophet (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) in a dream during the time of Ibn ʿAbbās, so I said to him: I saw the Messenger of Allāh (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) in my sleep. Ibn ʿAbbās said: The Messenger of Allāh (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) used to say: "Indeed, Shayṭān cannot imitate me, so whoever sees me in a dream has truly seen me." Can you describe this man you saw in the dream? He said: Yes, I will describe to you a man between two men, his body and flesh were fair with a hint of whiteness, with kohl-lined eyes, a pleasant laugh, a beautiful face with full cheeks, his beard filled the space between this and this, and it filled his chest—ʿAwf said: I do not know what was with this description—so Ibn ʿAbbās said: If you saw him while awake, you would not be able to describe him better than this. It was recorded by Aḥmad (1/361) and al-Tirmidhī in "al-Shamāʾil" (347 - "Mukhtaṣar al-Shamāʾil" by my pen), and its isnād is good in follow-ups. Another witness from the ḥadīth of Abū Hurayrah, raised, with the wording: ".. for Shayṭān does not take my form. Ibn Faḍl said once: imagines me." It was recorded by Aḥmad (2/332) from him, from ʿĀṣim ibn Kulaib, from his father, from him. And in another narration of his (2/342) through the route of ʿAbd al-Wāḥid ibn Ziyād: ʿĀṣim ibn Kulaib narrated to us with the first wording of Ibn Faḍl, and added: "ʿĀṣim said: My father said: Ibn ʿAbbās narrated it to me, so I told him that I had seen him. He said: You saw him? He said: By Allāh, I have seen him. He said: I mentioned al-Ḥasan ibn ʿAlī, he said: By Allāh, I have mentioned him and described him in his walk. He said: Ibn ʿAbbās said: He resembled him."
