" they only included him in supporting evidence." This was mentioned in "al-Tahdhīb" without any further comment. In any case, his ḥadīth is considered good. Al-Ḥāfiẓ said in "al-Taqrīb": "Truthful." Al-Dhahabī mentioned him in "al-Ruwāt al-Mutakallam Fīhim Bimā Lā Yūjib Radd Ḥadīthihim." All the other men are reliable narrators of Muslim except this Maḥmūd, and he has a good biography in "Tārīkh Baghdād" (13/94). He died in the year 297. Al-Mundhirī said in "al-Targhīb" (2/158) and was followed by al-Haythamī in "Majmaʿ al-Zawāʾid" (5/283): "It was narrated by al-Ṭabarānī in 'al-Awsaṭ,' and its men are the men of (the Ṣaḥīḥ)." It has supporting evidence from the ḥadīth of Khālid ibn Zayd al-Juhanī with a similar elevated chain. It was narrated by Ibn Ḥibbān (1619) and Aḥmad (4/114-115 and 116) with an authentic chain, and Ibn Mājah (2/172-173) with a shortened version of his saying: "or spend..."
