"I was with the Prophet (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) when they mentioned a man in his presence and said: How incapable he is! The Prophet (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) said: "You have backbitten your brother." They said: O Messenger of Allāh! We said what is true about him. He said: "If you said what is not true about him, then you have slandered him." And he said: "It was narrated by al-Ṭabarānī, and in it is ʿAlī ibn ʿĀṣim, and he is weak." I said: And from his route, it was extracted by al-Bayhaqī from al-Muthanná ibn al-Ṣabāḥ with its preceding isnād. Mālik narrated (3/150) and from him Abū al-Shaykh (190) from al-Muṭṭalib ibn ʿAbd Allāh ibn Ḥanṭab al-Makhzūmī that a man asked the Messenger of Allāh (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam): What is backbiting? The Messenger of Allāh (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) said: "To mention about a person what he dislikes to hear." He said: O Messenger of Allāh! Even if it is true? The Messenger of Allāh (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) said: "If you say falsely, then that is slander." Its origin is in "Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim" (8/21) and others from the route of al-ʿAlāʾ ibn ʿAbd al-Raḥmān from his father from Abū Hurayrah in a marfūʿ form with the wording: "Do you know what backbiting is?..." and it is extracted in "Naqd al-Kattānī" (36) and "Takhrīj al-Ḥalāl" (420) and as mentioned earlier (1419).
- "Adam was a prophet who was spoken to, there were ten centuries between him and Noah, and the messengers were three hundred and fifteen." It was extracted by Abū Jaʿfar al-Razzāz in "Majlis min al-Amālī" (q 178/1): He narrated to us
