- "It is sufficient for you if you mention your brother with what is in him." It was recorded by Abū al-Shaykh in "al-Tawbīkh" (188), al-Aṣbahānī in "al-Targhīb" (580), al-Bayhaqī in "al-Shuʿab" (2/304-2), and al-Baghawī in "al-Tafsīr" (7/346) from al-Muthanná ibn al-Ṣabāḥ, from ʿAmr ibn Shuʿayb, from his father, from his grandfather [from Muʿādh ibn Jabal]: that they mentioned a man in the presence of the Messenger of Allāh (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) and said: He does not eat until he is fed, and he does not travel until he is made to travel. The Prophet (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) said: You have backbitten him. They said: O Messenger of Allāh, we only spoke about what is in him. He said: Then you have mentioned it. The context is from al-Aṣbahānī, and the addition is from al-Bayhaqī. I say: This isnād is good except that al-Muthanná ibn al-Ṣabāḥ is weak; he became confused at the end of his life, and he was a devout worshiper as mentioned in "al-Taqrīb." Ibn Lahīʿah followed him from ʿAmr with a similar narration. It was recorded by Abū al-Shaykh (189). However, it is supported by what was recorded by Abū Yaʿlá in "his Musnad" (4/1460-1461), Abū al-Shaykh (182), and al-Bayhaqī from the route of Muḥammad ibn Abī Ḥumayd, from Mūsá ibn Wardān, from Abū Hurayrah who said: "We were with the Prophet (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam), and a man stood up. They said: O Messenger of Allāh! How incapable, or he said: How weak is so-and-so. The Prophet (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) said: You have backbitten your companion and eaten his flesh." Al-Haythamī said (8/94): "It was narrated by Abū Yaʿlá and al-Ṭabarānī in 'al-Awsaṭ,' and its wording ... (he mentioned it similarly and said:) In their isnād is Muḥammad ibn Abī Ḥumayd, who is also called Ḥammād, and he is very weak." I say: And from his route, it was recorded by al-Aṣbahānī in "al-Targhīb" (p. 577). Then al-Haythamī mentioned another witness for it from the ḥadīth of Muʿādh ibn Jabal who said:
