Muḥammad ibn Sīrīn disliked shaking hands, so I mentioned this to al-Shaʿbī, who said: "The Companions of the Prophet (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) would shake hands when they met, and when they returned from a journey, they would embrace each other." It was recorded by al-Bayhaqī in his "Sunan" (7/100) with a good isnād, as stated by the ḥāfiẓ Ibn Mufliḥ al-Ḥanbalī in "al-Ādāb al-Sharʿiyyah" (2/272). This is supported by what al-Ṭaḥāwī recorded in "Sharḥ Maʿānī al-Āthār" (4/28 - edited by our colleague Muḥammad Zuhri al-Najjār) from the route of Abū Ghālib from Umm al-Dardāʾ who said: "Salman came to us and said: Where is my brother? I said: In the mosque. So he went to him, and when he saw him, he embraced him." I say: Its isnād is good. The fiqh of the ḥadīth: Two benefits are derived from this ḥadīth: the first is shaking hands upon meeting, and the other is embracing after returning from travel. There are evidences for both from the Prophet (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam). As for the first, there are many well-known ḥadīths from his actions (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) and sayings, and some of them have already been mentioned in this "series" under numbers (160, 529, 530, 2004, and 2485). See "al-Targhīb" (3/270-271) and "al-Ādāb al-Sharʿiyyah" by Ibn Mufliḥ (2/277). As for the other, there is the ḥadīth of Jābir (raḍiya Allāhu ʿanhu) who said: "When Jaʿfar returned from Abyssinia, the Prophet (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) embraced him."
