- "The Companions of the Prophet (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) would shake hands when they met, and when they returned from a journey, they would embrace." Narrated by al-Ṭabarānī in "al-Muʿjam al-Awsaṭ" (1/8/1/99 - my numbering). He said: Aḥmad ibn Yaḥyá ibn Khālid ibn Ḥayyān al-Raqī narrated to us, Yaḥyá ibn Sulaymān al-Juʿfī narrated to us, ʿAbd al-Salām ibn Ḥarb narrated to us from Shuʿbah from Qatādah from Anas who said: ... and he mentioned it. Then he said: "No one narrated it from Shuʿbah except ʿAbd al-Salām. Al-Juʿfī was unique in narrating it." I said: He is trustworthy but makes mistakes as mentioned in "al-Taqrīb," and he is one of al-Bukhārī's shaykhs in "al-Ṣaḥīḥ," and those above him are among the narrators of the two Shaykhs [al-Bukhārī and Muslim]. Therefore, al-Mundhirī said (3/270) and was followed by al-Haythamī (8/36): "Narrated by al-Ṭabarānī, and its narrators are relied upon in (al-Ṣaḥīḥ)." I said: So the isnād is good, even though I have not found anyone who has documented Aḥmad ibn Yaḥyá al-Raqī (1), it appears from al-Ṭabarānī's words that he was not unique in narrating it. Moreover, he is one of his frequent shaykhs, as he narrated about eighty ḥadīths for him (78-160). The ḥadīth of Jābir ibn ʿAbd Allāh supports it, as he heard a ḥadīth from a man among the Companions of the Prophet (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) in Syria, so he traveled to him and found ʿAbd Allāh ibn Unays, who said: So he came out and embraced me,..... the ḥadīth. Al-Bukhārī recorded it in "al-Adab al-Mufrad" (969) and others with a good isnād, and al-Bukhārī mentioned it in "Kitāb al-ʿIlm" of his "Ṣaḥīḥ," and he titled it in "al-Adab al-Mufrad" as "Chapter on Embracing." Then I found another route for the ḥadīth, narrated by Ghālib al-Tammār who said:
