and the researcher of "al-Tārīkh" inferred that what led the ḥāfiẓ and others to apply Al-Bukhārī's statement to the biography of the younger was that Ibn al-Madīnī and ʿAmr ibn ʿAlī had criticized him, while they authenticated this Anṣārī. Then he responded to Sulaymān's accusation against him by summarizing that it was an ambiguous and unexplained criticism because it was based on a story that does not necessarily imply the mentioned falsehood in a manner that does not allow for interpretation, so refer to his words as they are beneficial. In summary: Ḥarb ibn Maymūn the elder, the narrator of this ḥadīth, is a trustworthy authority. He was authenticated by Ibn al-Madīnī, the teacher of Al-Bukhārī, as well as by Al-Fallas and Al-Sājī, and likewise by Muslim by including him in "al-Ṣaḥīḥ," and by Ibn Ḥibbān by mentioning him in "al-Thiqāt," and by Al-Khaṭīb who said about him: "He was trustworthy." No one weakened him except for the aforementioned statement of Sulaymān ibn Ḥarb about him, and you have already seen the response to that, and that he is not Ḥarb ibn Maymūn the younger as previously stated by a group of the imams. On this occasion, it is necessary to point out an error that also occurred in the biography of (the younger) in "Tahdhīb al-Tahdhīb" by Ibn Ḥajar, as he said (2/227): "Al-Mizzī said: Several have combined them, and this is correct, if Allāh wills." What I saw in "Tahdhīb al-Kamāl" by the ḥāfiẓ Al-Mizzī is contrary, as after he translated for the elder, he followed it with the biography of the younger, and said at the end of it: "We mentioned him to distinguish between them, and several have combined them, and several have differentiated between them, and this is correct, if Allāh wills." It appears that the phrase "and several have differentiated between them" was omitted by the copyist or printer of "Tahdhīb al-Tahdhīb," thus the meaning was disrupted. And Allāh knows best
