"If one of you sees something from his brother, himself, or his wealth that he admires, let him invoke blessing upon it, for the evil eye is real." Narrated by al-Ḥākim (4/215) and Aḥmad (3/447) through the chain of Wakīʿ ibn al-Jarrāḥ ibn Mulayḥ: My father narrated to us from ʿAbd Allāh ibn ʿĪsá from Umayyah ibn Hind ibn Sahl ibn Ḥunayf from ʿAbd Allāh ibn ʿĀmir who said: ʿĀmir ibn Rabīʿah and Sahl ibn Ḥunayf set out intending to bathe. He said: They went seeking shade, and ʿĀmir (as mentioned in "al-Musnad" and in "al-Mustadrak": "Sahl," which is correct) removed a woolen garment he was wearing. I looked at him and struck him with my eye. He went down to bathe, and I heard a sound in the water. I approached him and called him three times, but he did not respond. I went to the Prophet (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) and informed him. He came walking and entered the water as if I could see the whiteness of his shins. He struck his chest with his hand and said, "O Allāh, remove its heat, cold, and pain from him." He stood up, and the Messenger of Allāh (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) mentioned it. Al-Ḥākim said: "The chain of narration is authentic." Al-Dhahabī agreed with him. However, there is some scrutiny, as Umayyah ibn Hind was mentioned by al-Dhahabī in "al-Mīzān," who said: "Ibn Maʿīn said: I do not know him. I said: Saʿīd ibn Abī Hilāl and others narrated from him." No one mentioned his reliability, but Ibn Ḥibbān considered him reliable (4/41 and 6/70), so he is of unknown status. Therefore, al-Ḥāfiẓ said in "al-Taqrīb": "He is acceptable," meaning his ḥadīth is weak unless supported, and I did not find anyone supporting him in this ḥadīth
