- "Whoever goes to bed in a state of purity, an angel spends the night in his garment. He does not wake up at any hour of the night except that the angel says: O Allāh, forgive Your servant so-and-so, for he went to bed in a state of purity." It was recorded by ʿAbd Allāh ibn al-Mubārak in "His Ḥadīth" (2/101/2) and in "Al-Zuhd" (p. 216/1, no. 1244 - printed), Ibn ʿAdī (p. 89/1), Ibn Ḥibbān (167 - Mawārid), and Ibn Shāhīn in "Al-Targhīb" (p. 313/2), all of them from Ibn al-Mubārak: Ḥasan ibn Dhakwān informed us from Sulaymān al-Aḥwal from ʿAṭāʾ from Abū Hurayrah that the Prophet (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) said: and he mentioned it, but in "Al-Mawārid" it appears as "Ibn ʿUmar" instead of Abū Hurayrah, and perhaps it was a scribe's error. Indeed, it has been narrated from Ibn ʿUmar through another chain as will be mentioned. I say: This isnād is good, its men are trustworthy according to the standards of al-Bukhārī, despite a weakness in Ibn Dhakwān, but his ḥadīth does not fall below the level of ḥasan. Ibn ʿAdī said about him: "I hope there is no harm in him." Al-Dhahabī said: "He is sound in ḥadīth." Al-Ḥāfiẓ said: "Truthful but makes mistakes, and he used to practice tadlīs." Ibn al-Mubārak was contradicted by Maymūn ibn Zayd who said: Ḥasan ibn Dhakwān informed us from Sulaymān al-Aḥwal from ʿAṭāʾ from Ibn ʿUmar with it. It was recorded by al-Ṭabarānī in "Al-Kabīr" (3/209/1) and al-Bazzār (1/149/288 - Zawāʾid) who said: "We do not know it from Ibn ʿUmar except through this route, and trustworthy groups narrated from Ḥasan."
