some of those whom al-Tirmidhī referred to disagreed with him, including Ismāʿīl ibn ʿUlayyah, the trustworthy ḥāfiẓ. Ibn Jarīr narrated it with two isnāds from him, from al-Jurayrī, as a mursal report. I say: it is authentic as a mursal report. As for al-Ḥākim's statement following the musnad from ʿĀʾishah: "Authentic isnād," it is rejected for the reasons we mentioned, even if al-Dhahabī concurred. Yes, the ḥadīth is authentic, for it has a corroborating narration from Abū Hurayrah who said: "When the Messenger of Allāh (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) would settle in a place, they would look for the largest tree they could see and make it for the Prophet (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam), so he would settle under it, and his companions would then settle in the shade of the trees. While he was settled under a tree, having hung his sword on it, a Bedouin came and took the sword from the tree, then approached the Prophet (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) while he was sleeping and woke him up, saying: O Muḥammad! Who will protect you from me tonight? The Prophet (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) replied: Allāh. Then Allāh revealed: *"O Messenger, convey what has been revealed to you from your Lord, and if you do not, then you have not conveyed His message. And Allāh will protect you from the people"* (Sūrah al-Māʾidah, verse 67). It was narrated by Ibn Ḥibbān in his (Ṣaḥīḥ - 1739 Mawārid) and Ibn Mardawayh as mentioned in Ibn Kathīr (6/198) through two chains from Ḥammād ibn Salamah, narrated to us by Muḥammad ibn ʿAmr from Abū Salamah from him. I say: This isnād is ḥasan. Ibn Kathīr mentioned a second corroborating narration from Jābir. It was narrated by Ibn Abī Ḥātim. There are two other corroborating narrations from Saʿīd ibn Jubayr and Muḥammad ibn Kaʿb al-Qurāẓī as mursal reports. And know that the Shīʿah claim—contrary to the aforementioned ḥadīths—that the mentioned verse was revealed on the day of Ghadīr Khumm concerning ʿAlī (raḍiya Allāhu ʿanhu), and they mention numerous narrations in this regard, most of which are mursal and muʿaḍḍal, including from Abū Saʿīd al-Khudrī, but it is not authentic as I have verified in "al-Ḍaʿīfah."
