our servants have come to you, not out of desire for religion or interest in understanding, but they have fled from our lands and wealth, so return them to us. He said to Abū Bakr: What do you say? By Allāh, He will surely send upon you a man from among you, whose heart Allāh has tested with faith, who will strike you for the sake of religion, or strike some of you. Abū Bakr said: Is it me, O Messenger of Allāh? He said: No. ʿUmar said: Is it me, O Messenger of Allāh? He said: No, but it is the one who is mending the sandal. And he had given ʿAlī a sandal to mend. It was recorded by al-Tirmidhī (2:298), al-Nasāʾī in "al-Khaṣāʾiṣ" (p. 8), and al-Ḍiyāʾ in "al-Mukhtārah" (1/161), and al-Tirmidhī said: It is a ḥasan ṣaḥīḥ gharīb ḥadīth, not known except from the narration of Rabiʿī from ʿAlī. I said: Shurayk has poor memory, but he is suitable for citation and strengthening, and he was followed by Abān ibn Ṣāliḥ, from Manṣūr ibn al-Muʿtamir with it. It was recorded by Abū Dāwūd (2700) and from him by al-Ḍiyāʾ (1/161-162).
