in the Companions and disparaged them. May Allāh deal with him as he deserves. The ḥadīth has also been narrated in another wording through the route of Muḥammad ibn Jaʿfar al-Faydī, who said: Muḥammad ibn Faḍl informed us from al-Ajlāḥ, who said: Qays ibn Muslim and Abū Kulthūm informed us from Ribʿī ibn Ḥirāsh, who said: I heard ʿAlī say while he was in al-Madāʾin: Suhayl ibn ʿAmr came to the Prophet (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) and said: Some of our slaves have come out to you not out of religious devotion, so return them to us. Abū Bakr and ʿUmar said to him: You have spoken the truth, O Messenger of Allāh! The Messenger of Allāh (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) said: "You will not cease, O people of Quraysh, until Allāh sends upon you a man whose heart Allāh has tested with faith, who will strike your necks while you flee from him like frightened camels." Abū Bakr said: Is it I, O Messenger of Allāh? He said: No. ʿUmar said to him: Is it I, O Messenger of Allāh? He said: No, but it is the one mending the sandal. He said: And in ʿAlī's hand was a sandal he was mending for the Messenger of Allāh (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam)." It was recorded by al-Khaṭīb in "al-Tārīkh" (1/133-134 and 8/433), and by Ibn ʿAsākir (12/149/2). I say: Its isnād is good if al-Faydī preserved it, for he has ḥadīths in which he was contradicted, as the ḥāfiẓ said in "al-Tahdhīb," and he inclined to the view that he is not the one from whom al-Bukhārī narrated in "al-Ṣaḥīḥ," but rather it is al-Qawsī, and thus he did not authenticate him in "al-Taqrīb," but said about him: "acceptable," meaning when corroborated. This indicates that he did not consider Ibn Ḥibbān's inclusion of him in "al-Thiqāt" as reliable, and he was not followed in this as far as I know. And Allāh knows best. Then I found another route for it from Ribʿī, which strengthens it, narrated by Sharīk from Manṣūr from him from ʿAlī, who said: "Some people from Quraysh came to the Prophet (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) and said: O Muḥammad! We are your neighbors and allies, and indeed from..
