and it was also recorded by Aḥmad (1/412 and 463), Muḥammad ibn Makhlad al-ʿAṭṭār in "al-Muntaqá min Ḥadīthihi" (2/4/2), and al-Ḥārith in "Musnad" (folio 105-1, with his additions) through other chains from Shuʿbah with it. I said: This isnād [chain of transmission] consists entirely of reliable narrators according to the criteria of the two Shaykhs [al-Bukhārī and Muslim], but it is defective as will be explained. Asad ibn Mūsá contradicted them, saying: Shuʿbah narrated to us from Sulaymān from Khaythamah with it. It was recorded by Ibn al-Muẓaffar in "Gharāʾib Shuʿbah" (135/2). Asad ibn Mūsá is truthful but narrates rare things, so his statement "from Sulaymān"—meaning al-Aʿmash—is unusual. Shuʿbah was corroborated by ʿAmr ibn Abī Qays from Manṣūr with it. It was recorded by al-Khaṭīb in "al-Tārīkh" (14/286). And this ʿAmr is truthful but has errors. Jarīr contradicted them, saying: from Manṣūr from Khaythamah from a man of his people from ʿAbd Allāh with it. It was recorded by Aḥmad (1/379). And this is more authentic, as Abū ʿAwānah corroborated him from Manṣūr with it. It was recorded by Ibn Naṣr in "Qiyām al-Layl" (p. 45). Sufyān also corroborated him, saying: Manṣūr narrated to me with it. It was recorded by Aḥmad (1/444) and al-Bayhaqī (1/452), who said: "Ḥammād narrated it from Shuʿayb from Manṣūr from Khaythamah from al-Aswad from ʿAbd Allāh and made a mistake in it. It was said: from ʿAlqamah from ʿAbd Allāh, and this is an error." It was narrated by ʿAṭāʾ ibn al-Sāʾib from Shaqīq from ʿAbd Allāh ibn Masʿūd who said: "The Messenger of Allāh (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) forbade us from staying up late after ʿIshāʾ, meaning he discouraged us."
