It was recorded by Aḥmad (4/371). And this Abū Ayyūb is al-Ḥajjāj mentioned in the previous chain, and his father's name is Ayyūb as stated in "Tajlīl al-Manfaʿah," and it was noted that his status is unknown. Sufyān al-Thawrī differed from them and said: from Ziyād ibn ʿAlāqah from al-Mughīrah ibn Shuʿbah, he said: then he mentioned the ḥadīth as marfūʿ, and made it from the Musnad of al-Mughīrah! It was recorded by Aḥmad (4/252), al-Tirmidhī (1983), and Ibn Ḥibbān (1987). In a narration by Aḥmad from the path of ʿAbd al-Raḥmān: Ḥaddathanā Sufyān from Ziyād ibn ʿAlāqah, he said: I heard a man with al-Mughīrah ibn Shuʿbah, he said: then he mentioned it as marfūʿ with the wording: "Do not insult the dead, for you will harm the living." This is a severe discrepancy regarding Ziyād ibn ʿAlāqah, summarized in the following aspects: 1 - from him from his uncle Quṭbah ibn Mālik from Zayd ibn Arqam as marfūʿ. 2 - from him from al-Mughīrah ibn Shuʿbah as marfūʿ. 3 - from him from a man as marfūʿ. Perhaps the first aspect is the most likely because it matches the preferred narration from the narrations of al-Ḥajjāj ibn Ayyūb from Quṭbah ibn Mālik from Zayd with it, and it is known to have a sound isnād. It has a corroborating narration from ʿĀʾishah in al-Bukhārī and others, and it is extracted in "al-Rawḍ al-Naḍīr" (1/437). And a second from Ibn ʿAbbās, in its isnād is weak as I clarified in "Takhrīj al-Targhīb" (4/175). And a third also from ʿĀʾishah. It was recorded by Abū Nuʿaym in "al-Ḥilyah" (10/395).
