I said: Its isnād is good. It has two other paths from ʿAlī with al-Nasāʾī (2/287 and 302). And another path with Aḥmad (1/147). It has a corroborating narration from the ḥadīth of al-Barāʾ ibn ʿĀzib with al-Bukhārī and others, and it is cited in "al-Mishkāt" (4358 - second verification) and "Ādāb al-Zafāf" (125). In "Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim" (6/139-140) from Ibn ʿUmar: "His saddlecloth was purple." He said this in response to those who attributed to him that he prohibited the purple saddlecloth!

It was recorded by al-Ḥākim (1/385) from Shuʿbah, from Misʿar, from Ziyād ibn ʿAlāqah, from his uncle: "That al-Mughīrah ibn Shuʿbah reviled ʿAlī ibn Abī Ṭālib, so Zayd ibn Arqam stood up to him and said: O Mughīrah! Did you not know that the Messenger of Allāh (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) prohibited reviling the dead? So why do you revile ʿAlī when he has died?" He said: "Authentic according to the conditions of Muslim," and al-Dhahabī agreed with him. I said: It is as they said, and the uncle of Ziyād ibn ʿAlāqah is named Quṭbah ibn Mālik, and there is a disagreement in its isnād from Misʿar. Shuʿbah narrated it from him in this way, and Muḥammad ibn Bishr contradicted him, saying: Ḥaddathanā Misʿar from al-Ḥajjāj, the client of Banū Thaʿlabah, from Quṭbah ibn Mālik, the uncle of Ziyād ibn ʿAlāqah, who said: "Al-Mughīrah ibn Shuʿbah spoke ill of ʿAlī, so Zayd ibn Arqam said..." the ḥadīth.
