"I saw Abū Rāfiʿ, the freed slave of the Messenger of Allāh (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam), see al-Ḥasan while he was praying with his hair tied up, so he untied it, or forbade it, and said: ..." and he mentioned it. I said: Its narrators are trustworthy, the narrators of the two Shaykhs, except for Abū Saʿd al-Madanī. The ḥāfiẓ said: "It is said: He is Shuraḥbīl ibn Saʿd." I said: And that is not far-fetched, for he narrated from Abū Rāfiʿ, and from him Mukhawwal ibn Rāshid narrated, and he is known as Abū Saʿd, and he is truthful but became confused at the end of his life. And the ḥadīth has another chain, narrated by ʿImrān ibn Mūsá from Saʿīd ibn Abī Saʿīd al-Maqburī from his father that he saw Abū Rāfiʿ ... a similar ḥadīth, and in it, he heard the Messenger of Allāh (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) say: "That is the portion of Satan: meaning the seat of Satan, meaning the place of his braid." It is recorded in "Ṣaḥīḥ Abū Dāwūd" (653). And the ḥadīth has a corroborating narration from the ḥadīth of Umm Salamah: "That the Prophet (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) forbade a man to pray with his head tied up." Al-Haythamī said (2/86): "It was narrated by al-Ṭabarānī in 'al-Kabīr', and its narrators are the narrators of (the authentic collections)." I said: And it is as he said, except for the shaykh of al-Ṭabarānī (23/252) ʿAlī ibn ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz, and he is a trustworthy ḥāfiẓ, so the chain is authentic. Aḥmad narrated (1/146) from the path of Abū Isḥāq from al-Ḥārith from ʿAlī as a marfūʿ ḥadīth: "And do not pray while your hair is tied up, for it is the portion of Satan." Al-Ḥārith is weak, and what has preceded is sufficient. His saying: "with tied hair": meaning: some of it gathered to some like braided, and this
