"are you covering the wall? Allāh did not command us in what He provided us to clothe stones and mud." It was recorded by Muslim and others, with some adding to others, as you see it presented and explained in "Ādāb al-Zafāf" (pp. 111-112). It was also recorded by al-Bayhaqī (7/272) from Abū Jaʿfar al-Khaṭmī from Muḥammad ibn Kaʿb who said: "ʿAbd Allāh ibn Zayd was invited to a meal, and when he came, he saw the house adorned, so he sat outside and wept. It was said: What makes you weep? He said: When the Messenger of Allāh (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) would bid farewell to an army and reach the Farewell Pass, he would say: I entrust your religion, your trusts, and the ends of your deeds to Allāh. He saw a man one day who had lifted a cloak with a piece, so he faced the rising sun and said like this—and ʿAffān extended his hands—and said: The world has come upon you (three times), meaning it has approached, until we thought it would fall upon us. Then he said: Are you better today, or when a dish comes to you in the morning and another in the evening, and one of you goes out in one garment and returns in another, and you cover your houses as the Kaʿbah is covered? ʿAbd Allāh ibn Yazīd said: Should I not weep when I have lived to see you covering your houses as the Kaʿbah is covered?" I say: Its isnād is authentic. It was also recorded by al-Tirmidhī (2/77-87) through the route of Muḥammad ibn Isḥāq who said: Yazīd ibn Ziyād narrated to me from Muḥammad ibn Kaʿb al-Quraẓī who said: Someone who heard ʿAlī ibn Abī Ṭālib said: "We were sitting with the Messenger of Allāh (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) in the mosque when Muṣʿab ibn ʿUmayr appeared wearing nothing but a cloak lifted with fur..." a ḥadīth similar to it, and he added at its end: "The Messenger of Allāh (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) said: You are better today than you will be on that day." He said: "A good ḥadīth." Al-Bayhaqī narrated through two weak routes from Muḥammad ibn Kaʿb al-Quraẓī: ʿAbd Allāh ibn ʿAbbās narrated to me, raised [to the Prophet], with the wording:
