Ibn Jābir—whose name is ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ibn Yazīd ibn Jābir al-Azdī al-Dārānī—narrated from al-Qāsim ibn ʿAbd al-Raḥmān. It is possible that one of the narrators or scribes made an error and mentioned "ʿAbd Allāh" instead of "al-Qāsim." And Allāh knows best. The story is authentic, as al-Ṭabarānī reported it through multiple chains from Ibn Masʿūd with similar wording, but none of them include the phrase "except with the Qurʾān and remembrance." It was also reported by Abū Dāwūd, al-Nasāʾī, Aḥmad, and others. However, in a narration by al-Nasāʾī from the route of al-Zubayr ibn ʿAdī from Kulthūm from Ibn Masʿūd, it states: "Indeed, Allāh has introduced in prayer that you should not speak, except with the remembrance of Allāh and what is appropriate for you, and that you should stand devoutly to Allāh." Its isnād is authentic, as I have clarified in "Ṣaḥīḥ Abī Dāwūd" (857). It is a strong corroboration for the addition found in the route of al-Ṭabarānī. There is another corroboration from the ḥadīth of Muʿāwiyah ibn al-Ḥakam al-Sulamī, elevated with the wording: "Indeed, this prayer does not permit any of this human speech; it is only glorification, magnification, and recitation of the Qurʾān." It was reported by Muslim, Abū Dāwūd, and others among the compilers of the "Sunan," and it is included in "Ṣaḥīḥ Abī Dāwūd" (862).
