Ibn ʿAbbās said: that was the first of the prophethood that the Prophet (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) experienced when it was said to him, "Cover yourself," and his private parts were not seen from that day. Al-Ḥākim said: "The isnād is authentic!" Al-Dhahabī refuted him by saying: "I say: Al-Naḍr, they considered him weak." However, it is supported by the ḥadīth of ʿAbd Allāh ibn ʿUthmān ibn Khuthaym from Abū al-Ṭufayl, mentioning the construction of the Kaʿbah in the pre-Islamic period. He said: "The Quraysh demolished it and began rebuilding it with stones from the valley, carrying them on their necks. They raised it twenty cubits high. While the Prophet (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) was carrying stones from Ajyād, wearing a striped garment, the garment became tight on him. He went to place the garment on his shoulder, exposing his private parts due to the smallness of the garment, and he was called: O Muḥammad! Cover (in another narration: Do not uncover) your private parts. He was not seen naked after that." It was recorded by Aḥmad (5/455) with this context, and by al-Ḥākim, and the other narration is his, and he said: "The isnād is authentic," and al-Dhahabī agreed with him. I say: it is as they said. This story has also been reported from Jābir, but it does not include the command to cover. It was recorded by al-Bukhārī (1/103), Muslim (1/184), and Aḥmad (3/310 and 333).
