it mentioned earlier, and I suspect that he is the one in "Kuná al-Bukhārī" (49/427): "Abū ʿAbd Allāh al-Shāmī, from whom Jaʿfar ibn Sulaymān narrated." This is because Jaʿfar ibn Sulaymān belongs to the same generation as Muʿtamir ibn Sulaymān. The isnād of al-Ṭabarānī has revealed to us that what is in "Majmaʿ al-Haythamī": "Abī Khālid" is a distortion of: "Abī Ghālib." And Allāh knows best. Furthermore, al-Haythamī did not address the first path with mention, as if he overlooked it. The ḥadīth has a strong supporting narration from Abū Rāfiʿ, raised with a similar meaning. I have documented it in "Aḥkām al-Janāʾiz" (p. 51). Ibn Saʿd (7/503) and al-Bukhārī in "al-Tārīkh" (2/2/275-276) narrated from Thābit from Ṣāliḥ ibn Ḥujayr Abū Ḥujayr from Muʿāwiyah ibn Ḥudayj—who was a Companion—who said: "Whoever washes a deceased, shrouds him, follows him, and oversees his burial will return forgiven." It is a mawqūf narration; its men are trustworthy, the men of Muslim, except for Ṣāliḥ ibn Ḥujayr. Ibn Saʿd and al-Bukhārī documented him through this narration of Thābit—who is al-Bannānī—and Qatādah from him, and they did not mention any criticism or endorsement. Similarly, in "al-Jarḥ wa-al-Taʿdīl" (2/1/398). Ibn Ḥibbān mentioned him in "al-Thiqāt" (4/373).
