the meaning of this ḥadīth aligns with His saying: (Even if they had all that is in the earth and the like of it with it, they would offer it as ransom) (Sūrah al-Māʾidah, verse 36). His saying: (I have desired from you) means I have loved from you, and in Islamic law, desire is used to refer to both good and evil, guidance and misguidance, as in His saying: (Whomsoever Allāh wills to guide, He opens his breast to Islam; and whomsoever He wills to mislead, He makes his breast closed and constricted, as if he is climbing into the sky) (Sūrah al-Anʿām, verse 125). And this desire does not fail. It is sometimes used to mean what is synonymous with love and approval, as in His saying: (Allāh intends for you ease and does not intend for you hardship) (Sūrah al-Baqarah, verse 185), and this meaning is intended in His saying in this ḥadīth (I have desired from you) meaning I have loved, and desire in this sense may fail, because Allāh does not compel anyone to obey Him even though He created them for it (So whoever wills, let him believe; and whoever wills, let him disbelieve) (Sūrah al-Kahf, verse 29), and thus Allāh may desire from His servant what He does not love from him. And He may love from him what He does not desire, and this desire is called by Ibn al-Qayyim, may Allāh have mercy on him, the universal desire, derived from His saying: (His command, when He intends a thing, is only that He says to it, "Be," and it is) (Sūrah Yā Sīn, verse 82), and he calls the other desire synonymous with approval the legal desire, and understanding this division resolves many problems of the issue of divine decree and predestination, and saves from the tribulation of the doctrine of compulsion or isolation, and the details of this are in the esteemed book "Healing..
