the world and everything in it were yours, would you ransom yourself with it? He will say: Yes. It will be said to him: You have lied. I asked of you something much easier than this while you were in the loins—or in another narration: the back—of Adam, that you do not associate anything with Me, and I would not enter you into the Fire, but you insisted on associating others with Me, so he will be commanded to the Fire. Narrated by al-Bukhārī (2/333 and 4/239, 242) and Muslim (8/134, 135) and Aḥmad (3/127, 129), as well as Abū ʿAwānah and Ibn Ḥibbān in their Ṣaḥīḥ collections, as mentioned in "al-Jāmiʿ al-Kabīr" (3/95/1) through the route of Abū ʿImrān al-Jawnī—this wording is from Muslim—and Qatādah, both from Anas from the Prophet (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam). There is a third route: from Thābit from Anas with a similar narration. The ḥadīth was attributed by al-Ḥāfiẓ in "al-Fatḥ" (6/349) to Muslim and al-Nasāʾī, but I did not see it in Muslim.
